Book Review by Brian Davis - It's Your Ship
We all know what it is like to enter into a new assignment at work. In order to advance your career, you may even have to do a “stretch” assignment that will make or break your career. In the Navy, taking command of a ship is always a stretch assignment. But when you take over a ship that has performed at the bottom of the charts in nearly every measurable goal category; you had better bring a new approach and attitude to the table. Other than the sobering fact that real lives are regularly at stake, running a navy ship is a lot like running a business. When he took command of the USS Benfold, Captain D. Michael Abrashoff took an approach that demonstrated leadership, ingenuity, team-building, and innovation. In It's Your Ship, he translates his methods into an approach that can also be applied by land-bound captains of commerce and industry.
Describing "the ideas and techniques that I used to win my sailors' trust and, eventually, their enthusiastic commitment to our joint goal of making our ship the best in the fleet," Abrashoff cites embarrassing failures along with subsequent triumphs to illuminate the keys to his success aboard the guided missile destroyer.
